Adirondack Explorer is a nonprofit, independent news organization solely dedicated to reporting on the Adirondack Park in Northern New York. Through its bimonthly magazine, daily website reporting, newsletters, and outings guides, it covers the environment, recreation, and communities of the six-million-acre park.
Adirondack Explorer was founded in 1998 by Dick Beamish, a former communications director of the Adirondack Park Agency, who ran the publication as a black-and-white newsprint monthly before it grew into a full-color glossy magazine. Beamish served as publisher until 2008 and remains on the organization's board. The Explorer acquired the community forum Adirondack Almanack in 2014 and has continued expanding its investigative and environmental reporting team.
The organization publishes a bimonthly print magazine, an annual outings guide, daily online stories, several email newsletters, and a series of hiking guidebooks. Coverage spans environmental policy, water quality, wildlife, recreation, and the economic and social life of Adirondack communities.
Adirondack Explorer is a reader- and donor-supported 501(c)(3) nonprofit. Its website publishes free daily journalism, while the print magazine is available by subscription, donation, or single-copy purchase.
