The Acervo Histórico Digital is the online digital archive of the Dirección General del Acervo Histórico Diplomático (General Directorate of the Diplomatic Historical Archives), the archival arm of Mexico's Secretaría de Relaciones Exteriores (Ministry of Foreign Affairs, SRE). It provides public access to digitised primary sources drawn from nearly two centuries of Mexican diplomatic history.
The archival function of the Mexican Foreign Ministry has roots going back nearly 200 years, with the ministry's documentary heritage accumulating since the early nineteenth century. The Foreign Ministry formally created the Directorate-General for Archives and Library on July 1, 1968, marking the institutionalisation of dedicated archival management. In 2023, the ministry celebrated the 55th anniversary of this directorate, and as part of those commemorations launched the Acervo Histórico Digital platform to provide universal online access to the documentary patrimony held in the Archives of Diplomatic History. The digital platform was developed in coordination with the Foreign Ministry's Directorate-General of Information Technology and Innovation.
The Acervo Histórico Digital provides access to a range of specialised digitised collections, including: the Colección Cuba (covering the Mexican Embassy in Cuba during the Revolution, 1953–1964); the Colección Digital Exilio Español en América Latina (Spanish Exiles in Latin America, 1936–1974); the Colección Asilo América del Sur (South American Exiles in Mexico); the Colección Memorias Olímpicas (Olympics in Mexico, 1968); the Embajadores de México (database of Mexican Ambassadors); the Base de Datos del Archivo de la Embajada de México en Estados Unidos de América; and the Base de Datos de las Conferencias Panamericanas (Pan-American Conferences). In general, diplomatic records are transferred to the archive after 25 years, with access potentially restricted for sensitive materials.
The diplomatic archive contains significant documentation relevant to media history and journalism, including press coverage of major historical events, records relating to freedom of information, and documents related to internationally significant episodes such as the 1968 Tlatelolco massacre. Researchers in the fields of Latin American media history, press freedom, and diplomatic communications will find the collections particularly valuable.
The Acervo Histórico Digital is accessible online at acervohistorico.sre.gob.mx. Researchers wishing to consult physical holdings should contact the directorate to arrange access; a brief registration process can be completed on-site at the archive in Mexico City. Staff, including the Director General, are available to assist researchers in identifying relevant materials and coordinating digitisation requests.
