Aarhus Stadsarkiv (Aarhus City Archives) is the official municipal archive of Aarhus, Denmark. It was formally established in 2011 by the Aarhus City Council with the mandate of preserving local history and serving as the administrative archive for the municipality. The institution is now housed at Dokk1, the city's prominent cultural and library center on the Aarhus waterfront, which opened in 2015. The archive is led by City Archivist Merete Bøge Pedersen.
The history of archiving in Aarhus predates the current institution. A Business Archive was established by the city in 1946 as an independent historical institution focused on commerce, business, and economic history; this was taken over by the Danish State Archives in 1968. When the City Archives was created in 2011, it moved into the Vester Allé 12 building alongside the Business Archive before eventually relocating to Dokk1.
The Aarhus City Archives collects, preserves, and provides access to records from the Aarhus municipality, including materials from municipal institutions, private individuals, organizations, and companies. Key holdings and services include:
The Stadsarkiv's holdings of historical Aarhus newspapers and press clippings make it an important resource for researchers of regional Danish journalism and media history. The digital newspaper collections are accessible through AarhusArkivet.
The Stadsarkiv is located at Dokk1 and is open to the public during regular hours. Researchers can search and order archival materials online through AarhusArkivet at aarhusarkivet.dk. The archive's website is at stadsarkiv.aarhus.dk.
