KUSA (channel 9), branded 9NEWS, is an NBC-affiliated television station in Denver, Colorado, sharing studios with independent station KTVD on East Speer Boulevard.
KUSA has been Denver's leading local newscast for much of the past four decades. It was long owned by Gannett, and became part of Tegna Inc. when Gannett split its print and broadcast divisions in 2015. On August 19, 2025, Nexstar Media Group announced a $6.2 billion agreement to acquire Tegna; the deal closed March 19, 2026, shortly after receiving approval from the FCC and the Department of Justice. Eight state attorneys general and satellite provider DirecTV sued to block the merger on antitrust grounds. On April 17, 2026, U.S. District Chief Judge Troy L. Nunley issued a preliminary injunction requiring Nexstar to operate Tegna's acquired stations, including KUSA, as independent, ongoing competitors pending trial, finding the plaintiffs had shown a likelihood of prevailing on their antitrust claims. Nexstar has appealed to the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals; as of late May 2026, briefing in that appeal was ongoing, with the case's outcome undetermined.
