Welcome back, Newsjunkies! We’ve heard your feedback and we greatly appreciate it, please continue to share with us how we can do better.
Last week we introduced you to Newsjunkie and shared our vision. Today, we want to highlight our eight categories of coverage and show you how they can be searched, uncovered, and understood.
How to search across categories
When no category is selected (in the left panel), the search-box in the center view pane will generate results inclusive of all categories. When a category in the left panel is selected, for instance, Journalism Schools, the search-box will yield results exclusively from that category. Clicking the filter icon, on the right side of search-box, supports specific search criteria, across all categories.
JRMAPSOX categories
Our first version of a category system, Journals, Resources, Media owners, Agencies, People, Schools, Other, and Press Rooms (X) will necessarily evolve as we go forward. For now, all articles and data are searchable under these headings. We've created this basic structure as a starting place, a common-sense container for capturing and sharing details on the people and organizations of the news ecosystem. Here’s a brief look at each, with examples of how they can be useful to you:
Journals: An example of how to uncover ownership patterns and connections: On the Chicago Tribune page you will find that the journal is owned by Tribune Publishing Company, which, in turn, is owned by Alden Global Capital.
Resources: Under resources, you will find hundreds of organizations with descriptions of how they provide help, such as The National Writers Union, Reporters Committee for Freedom of the Press, Robert McCormick Foundation, The Writing Cooperative, Lawyers for Reporters, and many, many more.
Media owners: Alden Global Capital shows the company's contact information, and provides a comprehensive display of newspapers owned, with links to Newsjunkie profile pages for each.
Agencies: The profile on the Associated Press highlights its global reach and the services it offers to newsrooms worldwide.
People: The biography of Dan Gillmor highlights his contributions to journalism education at Arizona State University and his pioneering work in media literacy and digital journalism.
Schools: Columbia Journalism School includes information on "The World’s Oldest Journalism School," useful for prospective students and researchers alike.
Other: This catch-all category will eventually include awards associations, podcasts/ interviews, transcriptions, and other source material. You can also expect definitive backgrounders on categories of practice within journalism and the news business—examples: investigative journalism, data journalism, and corporate media structure. Read our backgrounders on investigative journalism and private equity firms to get an idea of these.
X (Press Rooms): Our Press Rooms page offers journalism-review information on accessing the media resources of major organizations like Doctors Without Borders, as well as government offices.
